Convert measured geometry into the supplier’s actual ordering unit.
Keep the measured surface distinct
A building footprint does not equal a sloped roof area. Board area does not state thickness, and a gravel volume does not state mass without density. Record the actual measurement convention and the source drawing before choosing a quantity model. Openings, edges and transitions need explicit treatment.
Check board-foot conventions
One board foot is the volume of a one-inch-thick square foot. For thickness and width in inches and length in feet, board feet equal thickness times width times length divided by 12. A 2-inch by 6-inch board eight feet long therefore contains eight board feet before grading or machining losses.
Translate area into packaged quantities
A roofing square represents 100 square feet. A measured 2,000 square feet requires 20 roofing squares before allowances. At a supplied price of 450 per square, the modeled base amount is 9,000. Coverage per pack, overlap and waste need separate entries; supplier pack dimensions should not be inferred from the category name.
Review layout before ordering
A percentage waste allowance is a planning adjustment, not proof that every part fits. A one-dimensional cut list cannot solve sheet nesting, grain orientation or defect avoidance. Compare the calculated amount with the layout and available stock sizes. Quantity arithmetic does not establish structural suitability, fixing requirements or compliance.
