A useful dashboard answers a recurring question.
Start with a decision the dashboard supports
A useful dashboard answers a recurring question. A sales manager may need to know which opportunities have no next action. A founder may need to see cash commitments before approving expenditure. Write that question before choosing charts.
Define the numbers behind each card
Record the source, period, owner and calculation for each measure. Distinguish orders from recognised revenue, leads from customers, and booked work from collected cash. Show the refresh time. A polished display can mislead when its figures use incompatible periods.
Make the review actionable
Add thresholds only when someone owns the response. A conversion decline should lead to a check of stage definitions, traffic quality or follow-up, not an unexplained red indicator. Keep detailed records accessible from the summary. Remove cards that nobody uses in the review and retain context for seasonal or one-off changes.
